I’ll guide you down here in setting up your phone so that it can send SMS/messages at only 1cent from an Emtel SIM. The principle behind is very basic. It uses the Email feature that some phone models have and allow you to send a message via Email through GPRS to the person you want. Since it’s through GPRS and not GSM(normal SMS uses this), the message is sent at only 1cent. Follow on for the configurations.

free sms

Check for these requirements first:

Make sure that your mobile meets the following criteria before proceeding :

  • GPRS for your mobile should be activated.
  • Your phone should have the Email function. Note that I’m not talking about SMS Email because that’s completely different. Check it out and you should see something from the menu called Email itself.
  • A POP3 mail account. Most of you must certainly have one, those having their email ending in intnet.mu already have a POP3 account. But if not you may consider giving yourself one from Yahoo! Just get to any subdomains of Yahoo! like Yahoo.co.uk or Yahoo.fr and their emails allow you to do POP3.

the approach

Since I own a Sony Erickson, this How-to will base itself on the options of a Sony Erickson. There are so many phone models and I know the options will differ from one to another but I’m sure if you grasp the concept behind you will be ready in giving it a try for any model you have.

Drum roll, the steps

Switch that phone of yours on, we’re starting.

  • From the main screen, go to Menu > Connect > Data comm > Data accounts > New account
  • Select GPRS data > and set these options as follows:
    • Name : mail
    • APN : WEB
    • User ID : put your mobile number here
    • Password: MMSC
    • finally do Save.

Now after setting the preliminary configuration, we must setup your phone to accept email, just follow on, we are on STEP 2 :

Get to the front screen and do

  • Menu > Messages > E-mail > Options > Edit account > Add new
  • Now do you remember the mail account I’ve been talking above, we will be using that for the new mail account that we’re creating with the phone.
  • Do connect using > mail protocol and set the following options :
    • POP3 inc.server : place your POP3 incoming server address here which should be something like pop.something.com for example.
    • Incoming Port** : leave all these settings intact, no touch here unless your POP3 mail has other settings as the one by default.
    • Mailbox : include your username in here. If your mail is person@intnet.mu then put only person here. In fact that option is a misnomer that should be username instead since this is what it’s really.
    • Password : enter that password for your POP3 mail account here!
Then we’ve got to poke some deeper settings, look on :
    • Outgoing server/port : you will obtain that information from the POP3 account you have.
    • E-mail adress : put your POP3 email address here, something like you@intnet.mu
    • Download : here you will specify whether you want to download the entire message(SMS) or just the headers(a small description probably) when receiving the new mail(SMS). I’ll explain this gibberish below, for now just follow on minutely, the explanation follows afterwards.
    • From name : this is your sender name, put something descriptive so that those receiving the mail/SMS may know who sent it.
    • Copy outgoing : do you want to send a copy of your messages to another POP3 mail then put that mail address you want here.
    • Check interval : specifies the lapse of time after which the phone connects and checks the mail automatically. Note that each connection costs 1 cent, pretty costly I think ;-)

Checking your emails on your mobile:

After configuring your phone as above it’s now also possible for you to check your email from that mobile itself. You’ve got nothing to do for that, in fact your POP3 mailbox will be checked during the delay we have set above so it’s automatic. You can also use the same technique to send a normal email to someone on a PC.

free sms

sending a 1 cent SMS/message

To send a message/SMS we won’t send it to the number for example 493 4585 instead we’ll send it using the mail service that EMTEL offers. With every number from EMTEL is associated an email address like number@emtelworld.net so 4934585@emtelworld.net in our example. So just compose a message through EMAIL and send it to the mail address of that number for which you want to send a message/SMS. It’s just simple plain basic.

More to come

This how-to is by no mean a complete and thorough one, some more explanation might be required, but as this new trick has been discovered, it’s still under the phase of further testing to bring it to the ultimate use so that one day we might stop calling it SMS but Mobilemail. Please leave by a comment to tell me what you think of this trick and if you have been successful in setting up your Mobilemail and don’t forget, poke everyone about that so that they can also start enjoying their 1cent SMS.

  • [...] This hack written by Hans is very interesting but not quite new. I have been using the same trick to send SMS to friends and relatives in Mauritius by e-mail after remembering how my mobile phones were automatically assigned e-mail addresses by CellPlus and Emtel. (Yes, this hack does work with CellPlus mobiles as well; one just has to discover one’s e-mail address.) [...]

  • Kyushiro-kun says:

Wow, nice! but you should have put my name in bold though, for our friend eddy thinks its your technique! :) just joking. One detail However Hans. The Password Field in the email configuration HAS to be the password you use to access your mail normally on a PC. That seems ambiguous from your description. Hey, I have all the rights to be Grrr if you just claim my ideas are yours! Lol Hey if Eddy is right, My jutsu will be complete:)

  • Khalil A. says:

This really rocks, man! I’m going to buy my Emtel SIM right now!

  • kyushiro-kun says:

@ Khalil a. Congratulations, You are the 5th person in mauritius to learn this tech. From me! Lol :) Eventually I will convert all Mauritians to mobilEmailers!
    Hehehe

  • kyushiro-kun says:

Hey hans, now that i Think of it, are you crazy? proposing To send Mobilemail With yahoo?
If everyone does this, Emtels server will probably sink because of the 180 characters Ads Yahoo adds at the bottom of each mail! hey this was a pre-release test which turned out to be unsuccessful, Yahoo is a bad idea. (Although you could use it as a main account and check your mail. But NOT mobilemail.) You could use o2 (check mywap.o2.co.uk on your phone (wap) to register your 02 email account.) The details for o2 mail are

    inc. and outgoing servers: 193.113.160.13

And the ports are the defaults set.

  • Hans says:

@ kyushiro-kun: hey dude no fighting now, check the right of our articles, now you can see who posted the article, hey no fighting dude, I clearly mentionned that the trick was yours, hope you enjoyed how I rewrite it using some of the guidelines of a how-to……….

hey kyushiro, I’ve researched a bit on my part about Cellplus but no dude there’s nothing on their side about email only some stuff called PushMail that allow you to check your POP3 on your mobile and that’s also only for those with line subscription dude, I think your MobilEmail does that better ;-)

you know for the o2 stuff thanks for mentionning should make the link between those 2 posts now

  • Hans says:

@ khalil: you know EMTEL is playing really well between the Mauritian network bringing out a wave of new changes and services which I think Cellplus is a bit lagging up behind…….now EMTEL even got TV with it!!!! but the only – I’ve found with Emtel is that it’s coverage is a bit weaken up as it’s not as powerful and widely covering as Cellplus………..but now with MobilEmail go get you an Emtel Sim dude what are you waiting for???? 1 cent is just too near to free SMS just back to those days when that was true…..MobilEmail is trying to bring just that ;-) thanks for dropping by ;-)

  • Neil says:

Hans… Show me this mobilemail things at school please.. i want to know more…

  • Christophe, alias Kyushiro-sama says:

@ Neil Come see me anytime in my class and ill show you, Hans will not be able to show you cause his phone does not support my jutsu. lol

More importantly, I told hans the bad news yesterday, O2 officially stopped new international registrations.
only people in the UK can register now.
It took me 2 white nights (is it said in english? lol :) ) to find a solution and i got one.

    From your WAP browser
    Go to http://wap.mymail.ro

    From the web browser
    go to http://www.mymail.ro/mail/signup

(sorry guys, the web page is in italian… But I guess youll be able to do it even so. Furthermore if you are willing to use MobilEmail you probably already have a Wap account. The wap site being in english, everything will be ok.

    Now the settings:
    outgoing and Inc server: mymail.ro

  • Hans says:

I’m just converting christophe words into plain simple English, what he is talking about is on another POP3 account, you see if you use Yahoo! POP3 then with your messages you’ll get many ads alongside so Christophe went to hack down some POP3 provider that would do so ads-free that’s when he came to met his lovely o2(yeah so lovely that you spent the whole night on it hein) but since O2 went down he found another ads-free POP3 for using with MobilEmail………….the Italian(hecky one since they won the World Cup, we might expect many free stuffs fro m Italy now) one………these words are for those that aren’t getting what Christophe just spit out…..thanks very much Christophe for bringing your body in here

  • k7 says:

    nice hack. Thumbs up.
Can you by the way update the article with eddy’s info.

  • Hans says:

@ k7: hello k7 nice you made it here, I’m happy you just came out to place that great nice comment of yours.

hey dude did I miss something? You know according to Eddy you can do this “hack” to Cell+ also but after digging much, I and Christophe got nothing on that subject. You know Cell+ got only PushMail concerning things with email unlike Emtel which got it right with their numbers………….

again I’m not too sure whether you wanted me to talk about that, could you please point me to that piece of info ;-) sure I’m gonna update it with that then ;-)

thanks very much for the visit dude, hope to see you back in here more often ;-)

  • k7 says:

eh d00d , me too :-) got nuthin concerning cell+.

will buy an emtel sim though ;-)

  • Hans says:

@ k7: yeah dude I think that’s the best option in here, this sure will be value for your money dude 1cent, just set the counter on and that mini card is not over yet…..;-)

hope you will get to setup MobilEmail in no matter of time when you will get your hands on that Emtel sim……if there’s any piece you didn’t grasp from the article above just let me know for clarification, there’s also Kyushiro/Christophe in here who would clear anything that’s picking you….

    thanks dude for the visit

  • kyushiro-kun says:

kuso, I dont know if myInternet connection is crappy, or if everybody decided to connect on the first sunday of our holidays, but I just went through hell to get here! :)

Hey, now that I think of it, Mobilemail might not work from emtel to cell+ but it MIGHT work the other way round. I have no Sim to test it but you might want to try that if youve got a cell+ sim. Just follow the instructions above, but when entering the username and password for the new data account, try to input the username and password you normally use for wap and mms. It might work because if you look at the settings, we never pointed to any emtel server to configure the account, so maybe all you need is a WEB apn access, which is part of GPRS access anyway. But note that it might also not work, as i havent even tried it yet so You Blogostars will be the alpha testers. Please send us the results once you have tried it!

  • [...] Let’s put the questions about whether Cellplus offers e-mail services on its mobile phone to rest. Indeed, Hans and company will be pleased by the news that one can send e-mail to Cellplus subscribers who have MMS-enabled mobile phones. The format of the e-mail address in this case is 230number@cellplusmms.mu. [...]

  • Eddy Young says:

Try sending an e-mail to 230number@cellplusmms.mu, replacing “number” with the actual mobile number.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hans says:

@ eddy: yo dude, thanks for bringing this trick down, everything that gets to enlighten things here helps dude, so sure this does.

  • dada says:

great! but someone know how to register to mms for emtel? I am looking for the settongs. Plz!!!!!!

  • Hans says:

@ dada: sure dude, I’ve got the manual/guide at home, if you wanna, I can lend it to you.

thanks for the visit, hope the mobilemail guide helps.

spread the word dude, gotta tell those whom you want to spend less about this.

  • dada says:

But how do i get the guide?

  • ed says:

How can I register to mms(emtel) without going to a showroom? Is there a special no. we can sms to so that we can have directly the settings and the code for mms?? please help me! I want to have mms in my mobile! thx in advance! :)

  • Hans says:

@ dada: yo dada you know I’ve got the guide from an Emtel showroom itself, I told them that I had different phones to configure so I couldn’t come every time for everyone so I asked them if I could get the guide. Just try out something like this. Hope this would work out or just get to a showroom, sure they will have one there, just ask them the settings then.

  • Hans says:

@ ed: yo for this I’m ain’t too sure but I think that calling the customer care and then asking them for the settings will do the thing, think that it comes like a message that tells you to save it, you do so and tada your phone is configured for MMS. I ain’t too sure about your question.

Directly having the settings would be to lay your hands on the guide of configuration. I think that if you go to a showroom and ask them for one, then they ‘might’ probably give you one. In it you’ve got all the settings for popular models, just choose and configure.

But for the immediate moment I would advise you to call and ask the settings that they will send for you to save.

Hope this helps, tell me how things go on ;-)

  • ed says:

I only wanted to know what is the apn, ip address, username and password if required for emtel coz I no how to install it. But only these data I need, thats all. So i was asking if you could simply tell me the apn ….that’s all
    :p

  • Hans says:

@ ed: yo ed, yeah sure, I needed some clarificationon on that question for splashing you the stuffs. Here it comes for the general config for MMS:

    Put the following ;

    APN: WAP
    IP address : 192.168.0.7
    username: your mobile number
    password: mmsc

get to try it and tell me ya ;-)

  • ed says:

but this data is the same for wap, no?

  • ed says:

And thx for all! you are great! and this blog too!! :P

  • ed says:

Its not working.. are you sure it is for emtel. Do you use this network?

  • Hans says:

@ ed: thanks dude for the ‘compliment’ ;-)

yo dude sure it’s the general settings for MMS but I think that probably varies from model to model but supposedly this should work.

You know take this one, it’s my settings, gotta try it out and tell me. Yeah I use EMTEL

    My settings for MMS:
    APN: the same
    IP address: the same
    username: 230my number
password: for me this field is blank

hope this helps out dude ;-)

hey have you tried calling them and asking them to let you have the settings automatically?

thanks again for throwing out your comments ;-)

  • Kyushiro says:

Well, Just some clearing up the facts: 2 things are required to use mms (and wap and mobilemail ) You need

    (1) The settings to configure the phone
    (2) A GPRS access account at emtel

The settings can be obtained from the booklet BUT The GPRS account can only be created at emtel! Its kinda like your internet access, you might have your PC configurated but if you dont have an account with an ISP its useless!

To know wether you have a gprs account, Check the main screen.

NOKIAS should have a G near the network indicator,

SONY ERICSSONS should have a blue triangle on the network indicatro. Only then the booklet would be helpful. else you would have to go to the showroom anyway.

  • ed says:

    Hi again.
I’ve contacted Emtel and they send me the settings but still, its not working.
    Are the settings correct?
    APN: wap.emtel.com
    IP: 192:168:000:007
    username: mobile no.
    password: mmsc

And the blue traingle does not appear.

And I would like to know what the booklet contains? only the settings?
    mrgreen

  • VaLeRY says:

    This is a cool blog!

I only wanted to know why I cannot access to any wap sites on my mobile except the cellplus wap site. It says communication error but my wap account is good. For e.g the site wap.zedge.net cannot be accessed. Can you access to other wap sites?

  • Kyushiro says:

    @ ed :

there are only 2 possible solutions.

    1)
gprs is not set as data comm preferred service, or

    2)
emtel sent you only the gprs data, and did not register you as a gprs user. For the 1st case, assuming u have a S.Ericson, u can fix this by doing menu  conect  data comm  pref service  automatic.

try it hope that solves your problem

  • Hans says:

    @ valery:

thanks for the compliment, sure it’s so nice :o

hey sorry you know we(I and kyushiro) use EMTEL and for cell+, I don’t know much about this problem(even kyushiro doesn’t :!: ), yeah I think it’s a problem because I’ve checked that on a friend’s mob and there also it was the same, think they let you only to visit the wap site that they throw you and don’t allow you to insert and mobilesurf your own wap sites. Should have phoned them to ask them, think you should try that.

8O really I think cell+ is just $#@#@#@#@#@#@ think gotta do like most of us : hop onto EMTEL until a better one comes

thanks Valery for the visit, hope you loved it, take a look at the graveyard if you want for things that might interest ya ;-)

    see ya soon on BlogoSquare.

  • comradejv says:

hey guy you got that news on free sms on emtel service??? be carful with this because some of my friend’s mobile have been block…

  • Hans says:

@ comradejv: yo Emtel pushed it out man  they debugged their network I think :dizzy: or more probably shut that backdoor, for a moment we had the key to enter freely as we could, 8) too great back to the days of free SMS but now back to reality

  • Kyushiro says:

    @ Hans

that’s more an open window than a backdoor lol :dizzy: btw Hans you were speaking about a relay sms technique, so what about it :?: :?: :!: (6)

hi hans :) wow, that one really seems cool!
i own a t610, i think it should be okay, but one precision please,
When you create the data account, do you need an IP adress or something? and yeah, are the tarifications the same if i send attachments with the mail?
or is it on a price/kb basis?
    Thanks

  • kyu says:

    erm…. leo-kun…..
    how to say this….
you could have asked me :) by the looks of this great jutsu you should have known this actually comes from me :) (i was bloggin in here with hans before :p

anyway, nope, no need for ip, and yes, its price/kb. actually, if 1 character=1 byte cause formatting doesnt count. so each sms written on your phone would be about 500 Bytes, so put it 1 cent per 500b, 2cent/kb. but thats a rapid rounded off calculation. you should experiment this (with dummy sound recordings of custom size)

  • Hans says:

    @ leo

Hope kyu helped in answering your questions….yeah it’s actually he who came with this….

  • leo says:

Thanks guys, but, HOW WAS I SUPOSED to know that was from kyu me??? :) (Hans, you better put a notice or something cause i know this guy, if you try to steal one of his babies hell just flame ya over and over until you wish you were in a barbecue instead :)

  • Hans says:

    @ Leo

haha :P yeah I shall put a notice but you know we were a team and we still are and now we can peacefully share ideas. Infact there are lots or Kyu’s article in here like the Recover your CD and lots spread around. I kinda due Kyu for these but sure I’m repaying him somehow I’ll. :D
