Is that URL too long?

September 5th, 2006 by Hans

Your site’s address : ain’t that something important, that unique link that identifies it on this whole huge web. So how would you do when handing that to somebody if that same addresss was so long to spell and write? I mean something really long like http://mojojobang.freehost.co.uk or anything that might spell too long for you, you’ve seen that so many times on the web.

what's that URL

It’s sure not so easy to remember that address and be practical with it. So how about making it really really short, ok it’s in 3 parts but it’s upon you to make it that short if you really want. Let me give you the format that might be :

http://a name you would choose.co.nr so for me even http://f33l.co.ur really makes something really nice, short and practical.

sandy URL

what’s that mini?
How about getting that? The version of your blog’s/site’s address in a short form and it’s free(if not I won’t write that whole post to tell you about it). When you would type the shorty version into that browser’s address, it will carry you to your very home sweet site. Don’t you worry if you still like that ancient and long-winded address of yours, it would be still available(you can it make it to show up instead of the new short one if you want, follow on below).

I think that won’t require further explaination on what I’m talking but if you still don’t understand what’s this all about, the comment form is here to clean that up, feel free to drop a word ;)

Ok let’s make a try in how that would be accomplished :

  • Point your browser to that address : http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ or click on the nice banner below, both will land you there ;)

  • Free Domain Name - www.YOU.co.nr!

  • So here you are, that very place that process our URL into its mini shorty version. Move a bit to the bottom until you see that very text box :
    check for it.jpg

That will check to see whether the one new short address you would like is available to be handed freely, make your choice, type it and click Check!
  • Now you will be presented with a long list of “trying to buy you” so fast as you could, move to the bottom of that same page until you spot : the free version being displayed and click signup
  • select the free version.jpg

  • Whooo! Congratulations! It’s available, get to the bottom(why would they place all the juicy stuffs only at the bottom ;) and click that button : I want to signup for this domain (look at it carefully, final choice?)
  • haha, the most funny spam check will then presented to you. Do you know how to talk/understand english? if not your kinda use Google’s Translator or phone some british dude. Take the test : nothing frightening, only choosing the right answer for some general questions about everything. Then make it to next step by clicking that button : Next Step
  • next gen spam test.jpg

  • Hah, some rules now(I haven’t read that, if someone did, would you shout it to me ;), you know it : go to the bottom of the page, tick that checkbox telling that you’re agreeing with things they’ve thrown above and click I have read and I Agree! (they should have put that option for me I haven’t read but I still agree to get that short free URL)
  • Wouufff! Another form, ok fill that with any information you would like and hover to the bottom, choose your password(account for that URL you’re requesting) and put your site’s full address into the Target URL box, the one that’s seeming long and that you would want the short one to point to. Then make it to next step.

  • no not again, it’s another form, ok hope it’s the last. Fill that carefully : it’s about your site info. Now something too important I would point out : the option Cloaking : it’s on but you can put that off if you want. What’s that cloaking? It’s only to choose whether that new address will hide(when you would see it in the address bar) the long long version you had previously, the original one. So if you want it to hide the long original address choose on(new short one will display in address bar instead of long previous address). Then make it to the next step
  • Ahhh at last the last form, check all entered information, if that’s correct : follow on pushing that complete button
  • Congrats! Congrats you’ve made it(I think I made it alive after cutting through all those forms), check your mail address for the activation code and follow the information given to activate your account.

It’s activated, so now while entering that mini URL, it will be carrying you to your site. Ain’t that kinda cool? Woo. I would like to throw the ball to Josh, I found this on his blog. How would that feel, typing less to get to your site’s homeground? Feeling revamped? Would you tell me how would cutting your long”y” URL into its mini version(seen Austin Power haha) feel like?

Linkers
For all those who tried it, would you throw that nice shorty new address/URL of yours onto a comment : I’ll add it to the post here into this pool of Linkers ;)
