mayday, mayday : my pc is down

September 14th, 2006 by Hans

A cold boot. That hasn’t brought it back. A warm one. Still nothing. Is the injury a profound one? I hear no sound beep coming from it.

I open it, everything seems fine inside. Nothing burnt, haaa thank God.

I take off every of its cable. Some deep examination might be required. We’ve got a soldier down, mayday, mayday!!!!

I thought that it was dust. My pc did that to me in the past. Dust covered some of its internal parts and that didn’t allow it to boot. I took off the RAM, shed the dust off. I put that vital part back, the RAM. Another try. POWER ON. Nothing. The screen is the one who goes first.

OK, I won’t give up. Let’s examine things. Everything is put back to where it was, the cable to the holes, the casing on it. POWER ON. The screen turns off, no beep. Nothing, not a single sound.

I try cleaning inside. Some more time. Nothing.

Is that humidity, might you have catch a cold?

The RAM seems fine else some lots of beep would have come out, you would have screamed.

But something strange. Before I push the ON button, you’re already starting up. As I put power on there, you start without me having pushed that ON button. How’s that?

Backup required. We’ve got a SOLDIER down. Medkit in the field. Don’t go away.

Don’t know yet if it’s the power supply who is at fault. I don’t think so  my pc was hiding behind the voltages using a UPS.

Lol @and @ anoop, both formats are okay, “Mayday” (Hey its working, my apostrophe key!!!)  Is the english version, they probably adapted it from the french cause it is easier and faster to pronounce than “Help me, help me!”  lol

    @ anoop

For your monitor, I think it’s the first sign that it’s giving to tell you that it will drop soona or later.

I’ve gone through this. My Philips monitor started to blur, some colour missing then it gave up.

Reparation costs for monitors are way too high, a new one would seem cheaper that repairing it. That’s how I landed with a 17″ Viewsonic, a black one.

My router has bit the dust too, so it’s gonna need replacing asap.

Dust is a killer here too, I regularly clean out my pc.

  • 13 Hans Sep 19, 2006 at 6:47 pm

    @ Techz

I heard that there were special sprays that could be used to prevent the dust from sticking to the pieces inside.

I still have to test this to value its effectiveness.

Then what’s your secrets for fighting the dust?

  • 14 TechZ Sep 20, 2006 at 4:05 pm

hans, I clean the PC regularly, thats my secret ;)

  • 15 Yvonne Sep 20, 2006 at 5:37 pm

Well, since TechZ’s here, I’m going to gleefully say, “Mac Power!” … and then run away …. right now …

  • 16 Hans Sep 21, 2006 at 1:01 am

    @ techz

thanks for the tip dude. I’m going to do it right more often now ;)

  • 17 Hans Sep 21, 2006 at 1:06 am

    @ Yvonne

don’t tell me. Mac ain’t getting dusty those days? Does the dust fear the aesthetic look of a sleek apple that it won’t even think of messing around it.

Hey Yvonne, why are you running away? I haven’t even showed you my BlogoBox. Get to meet it if you’ve got some time. Perhaps there might be something that could pull you there.

Thanks for getting onto my playground, hope to see you more often.
