GeeXbox : Bootable media center

January 18th, 2007 by Hans

Play your DVD’s/VCD’s or any video files from your hard disk, listen to your audio CD or any audio files or watch TV(if you’ve a TV Tuner/Card). All these without even loading M$ Windows or loads of programs consuming lots of memory and processing power that said if your PC is sporting some good stuffs. Would that be possible? Would that be fun or more liberating?

Enter GeeXbox. It’s a live linux CD that you download here as an ISO image(choose i386 for your computer) and burn onto a CD(see here for instructions for burning ISO image to CD). Weighing not more that 7MB, GeeXbox boots your computer into a full-featured media center without having you to install nothing. NOTHING AT ALL. Your computer is left intact as it is. No change is done whatsoever to your computer or to your OS(Windows if you’re using it)

You just insert the CD when the computer boots and GeeXbox loads into memory. Then the CD is ejected allowing you to start using it for the above mentioned purposes without having you to bother about opening programs or installing codecs to play files like DivX.

You don’t even have to configure it to play from your TV Card. GeeXbox configures everything while it loads into memory. You just select the task you want from the menu using the directional keys and pressing the Enter key to run a task. To hide the menu anytime, you just press the M key.

Ain’t that fun? Nothing to install, no more lots of memory needed to play your DVDs smoothly, no Windows OS slowing things down. You’re left with a complete media center running without the constraint of an OS and its fatty programs.

Aufaite fais moi savoir si t’as tester le Geexbox  et comment tu l’as trouves.

    erm, hans-kun,

    (1) your feed @ feedburner should be updated to point here :)

    (2) your Navbar….. well, handcoded i guess?? change that ASAP, your links are broken. use php blog_url rather than your url to make it relative…..

    (3) you better put that link back to co.nr else theyll kill your account.

    Thats all i guess :)

    see ya :)

une autre suggestion en plus de celles de kyu :sly: : la partie de ta barre “lastest buzz” est pas très lisible vu que certains couleurs de font sont les mêmes que le background

    @ kyu

how about this one Kyu. again the dark style with a blend of minimalistic approach. I’ve codename the theme journal. For the time being, I’m adapting some SEO stuffs down into its veins. Will share those tips with you as I fully understand them which is after I’ve implemented them :)

oh, forgot to give feedback! :) geexbox is nice except 3 things

    (1) video: image breaks sometimes during play…

    (2) Doesnt play rmvb (90% of my anime are thus unplayable)

    (3) hey, it wastes about 690 MB per cd!!! :)

    Good points:

easy access to media files on the Hdd

    Plays most flavours of DivX/Xvid

    nice interface.

less than 10 mb so its swift

cd needed just during boot :)

    woooooow, love this one!!
kind of gives back some use to the diskless p2 in our cagibi, it works ive just tested! (Thanks for reviving that pc, now it will serve exclusively as a media center :)

    @ leo

nice to see that you found great goodies back into my squarchives.. there are more of such..which I’m sure you’re gonna love as much as the above one.

yeah that kinda put your old pc back to life. You can also add more juice to the GeeXbox distro by adding more codecs and software. If you need help on this, just buzz me.

thanks to you for going through.
