More fun with random picking of post in Blogger and Wordpress

May 1st, 2007 by Hans

Most people like to scan content following a proper hierachy, chronologically like most blog would do, that is digging in the past archives from the present time. Recently Matt came with a new way to allow people to browse your content. Perhaps that might not be a definitive way, but nevertheless it’s fun.

It allows people by clicking on a link on your blog to fall on a randomly fetched post. You can download the Wordpress plugins or setup this effect with Blogger too using a code/widget from phydeaux3

random picking

You can see a working version of the Wordpress plugins on Weblog Tools collection at the top bar near the RSS and Feedburner’s image. For the Blogger demo, head to Google Operating System.

I find that the random fetching of content is a great way to let people meet with new content. Take Blogger extremely popular navigation bar at the topside that allows you to fall on a random Blogger blog.

I wish that this could be accomplished on Wordpress(hosted) too. Perhaps a script will generate a unique number according to your URL, you copy it somewhere like in your sidebar(for crawling purposes) and when someone click on their random blog link from their Wordpress blog, a random number would be generated, this shown to a central server that tells the URL of the Wordpress blog associated with it. And there you are, on a totally random blog.

I think that’s the major social advantage of the Blogger platform compared to Wordpress, which seems monotonous and lonely if you don’t have the patience of gathering good links in your blogroll.

Perhaps someone could come with a plugins or better a website to allow us, Wordpress users to meet with new random Wordpress blogs from within our own blogs. Do you know any such site or plugins?
