Download myJournal ethereal major update : myJournal supareal

May 24th, 2007 by Hans

Your favourite minimalist Wordpress theme, myJournal ethereal has just received a major update after the many feedbacks and opinions of users which were really indeed very appreciated. Download myJournal supareal or check out the list of added features at the bottom :

New features

  1. Added random rotating banner which changes automatically on each page refresh.
  2. Larger sidebar for you to accomodate more things and give you more air to breathe
  3. Proper styling for the Calendar widget which now gets displayed super good.
    proper styling of calendar
  4. + All the features work fine good with Internet Explorer. No worry on this side.

putting your header image

myJournal supareal, comes ready out of the box with 20 super cool image headers. All the images are found in the images/rotator folder under the theme’s folder. If you want to add your header image, just drop the image in that folder.

new policy

I’ve also come with a new policy. I’ve included in the theme’s folder a ReadMe file telling users about a condition they should abide to. If they ever want to remove the links pointing to BlogoSquare and the theme’s download page, that’s here, then they should post something about myJournal Supareal on their blog and point to this post. Indeed the sidebar’s link are there to spread the word about the theme, this to allow more people to know about a rocking theme they could be using for FREE. So please don’t touch the link in the sidebar pointing to this post or just post something like I’ve said.

I’m wondering if other folks are having issues in downloading the updated file? I can download and unzip the my journal ethereal, but not the supareal. Any help? The same error occurs on the wp.org site.

Hi, I am trying to use the theme for my wordpress blog, but I cannot login to my wp-login.php page because I get this eror in my browser:

    http://www.liveloud.org/jasonblog

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/liveloud/public_html/jasonblog/wp-content/themes/myjournal-supareal-10/functions.php:6) in /home/liveloud/public_html/jasonblog/wp-login.php on line 12

I didn’t know if there was anything that you could do.

Hi Jason, thanks for downloading the theme. I also got this problem. Are you on Wordpress 2.2?

Just delete the functions.php file from the myJournal Supareal folder and everything should be fine.

I’m actually working on a fix for this, maybe it’s due to the inbuilt feature of widgets in 2.2.

Do tell me whether that works.

  • 4 Shankar Ganesh May 25, 2007 at 8:44 am

Beautiful. Great Job, Hans. BTW, sometimes the blog description gets overlapped by the sidebars. Can you fix it? :-)

  • 5 Hans May 25, 2007 at 8:51 am

    @ robyn

sometimes when many people download from the theme’s org, the link becomes unavailable, something like instead of getting a zipped archived you get a download.php stuff.

Check out the above post. I’ve included a link to the download from my own server. That should be fine then. Do tell me whether it’s ok ;-)

Thanks, Jason. This updated wp theme is amazing. I love it.

  • 8 TechZilo - Tech news and reviews May 25, 2007 at 4:28 pm

Hey, can you fix the blog title and description? I am on 1280X1024, and only the desc.+title pushes out to the right. everything else is on the left.

  • 9 Hans May 25, 2007 at 4:46 pm

    @ Shankar Ganesh & Techzilo

Can you send me a screenshot please? I’ve tested the theme on high resolution and for me it worked fine  perhaps you’ve put many tabs(pages), then this will push the description further to the right and ultimately it will get downwards too :(

For a quick solution try limiting your top nav to the most important pages, then on your sidebar list the other pages(less important). For e.g on your top nav bar, you could have the home, top posts, archives and on the sidebar contact link, sitemap page, etc…

  • 10 Beau May 25, 2007 at 4:49 pm

 The theme is beatiful Hans. Absolutely beautiful. The only problem I see is that it doesn’t cross browse with IE (of course). The format breaks down a bit. The menu and content area moves up near the top of the screen, and the logo appears behind them. By the way, you are one of the nicest people I’ve met in the web world, and I greatly appreciate your talent. Keep it up!

  • 11 Hans May 25, 2007 at 5:02 pm

@ Beau, thanks for the sweet compliment Beau. I really appreciate it. As for the theme, I’ve tested it on Internet Explorer 6 and it’s working fine with me. Are you on IE 7 or something lower? Could you please send me a screenshot if things really seem horrible lol :)

Thanks so much indeed for using myJournal. Do keep in touch here.

  • 12 robyn May 25, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Thanks, Hans. With the time difference and all, I’m just now seeing your responses [& additional comments]. I will test the new download from your server when I get home later today. Thanks much for your help on this!

Also, is the random/rotating header something that can be switched out once I get it loaded? Or, does the theme come w/ some of those image files for the header?

  • 13 Hans May 25, 2007 at 5:21 pm

    @ robyn

The header images rotate only on a new page refresh, so it won’t just get rotated(which might really get annoying lol :) as for e.g when you’re reading a post or doing something else on the blog.

And yeah myJournal Supareal already comes with 20 image headers for you to enjoy some great shots goodness :) if you want to put your own, just drop it in the images/rotator folder and that’s it all :)

    thanks for enjoying the theme…….

  • 17 Jason May 25, 2007 at 10:21 pm

I waswondering how you can add more headings in the sidebar. My blogroll is not showing up, and I didn’t if I could add more sidebar options.

Also I was wondering if there was any instructions in uploading my own header images.

    Thanks

    Jason

  • 18 Khalil A. May 25, 2007 at 10:22 pm

I always thought the minimalist influence was, well, more “minimal!”

  • 19 Hans May 25, 2007 at 10:31 pm

    @ jason

just open your sidebar.php found in the theme’s folder and give a look at how the rest of the headings are placed to give you an e.g of what you should put there and how to put it.

To put your own header image, navigate to the images/rotator folder found in the myJournal supareal folder. Then drop that header image there, that’s it. Your header image will get displayed through a random rotation when the page is refreshed.

For your blogroll, I’ve provided detailed instructions here. Please refer to them and if you ever need more help, feel free to ask.

  • 20 Hans May 25, 2007 at 10:32 pm

    @ khalil

then I’m making sure to get it less minimal lol :) hope you did like that new touch to the theme? So what’s your opinion on this update?

  • 21 Youssef May 26, 2007 at 12:10 am

    Oh hi,

I was just wondering, well I had 2 questions.
You know you have the comments as “latest” first.
How do you change that? Like in a normal order?

And my 2nd question would be can I delete the links just above the comment-section? The Moneymaking-section I mean.

    Besides that, supah theme!
I really love the white and the feel of it

  • 22 Hans May 26, 2007 at 12:18 am

    @ youssef:

thanks for your compliment and using the theme. First the links are there just to give you a proper place to host your OWN links so if you aren’t putting your own links, feel free to remove them.

as to remove the reverse chronological order, open the comments.php found in the theme’s folder, find this line :

    <?php $comments = array_reverse($comments, true); /* reverse comments */ ?>

and remove it, that’s it, you’ll then be returned to the normal order as comments come in, they will be displayed at the bottom….

do tell me whether that works…

  • 23 Youssef May 26, 2007 at 12:26 am

    Oh it works!
    Thank you!

But I got another question now (sorry)

I cant seem to edit the sidebar. The option isnt there. Usually its under the presentation-tab but when I click widgets it says that the sidebars are not defined.
I cant activate the sidebar-widget either.

    Is that something I did?

  • 24 Hans May 26, 2007 at 12:32 am

    @ Youssef

it’s probably due to a bug on the Wordpress 2.2 version. I’ve included a link in the above post about this issue.

I’ll keep you up-to-date about this when the Wordpress community fixes. Do subscribe to my feeds to receive such further updates info :)

Nice to know things are working fine. Do let me know whether you need further help, feel free to ask. Don’t ya worry, I’m indeed glad to help you :)

  • 25 robyn May 26, 2007 at 12:59 am

ok–another question for the super theme guy: how do i increase the margins for the sidebar? i’m loosing some of my text, and for some reason unable to find the css to edit it. whatever i am editing isn’t really changing anything! thanks in advance!!

    ciao

  • 26 Beau May 26, 2007 at 3:03 am

    Robyn,
It looks like the file on the first download is corrupt. There is 2nd download site up top. :-)

  • 27 Beau May 26, 2007 at 3:07 am

“ok–another question for the super theme guy: how do i increase the margins for the sidebar? i’m loosing some of my text, and for some reason unable to find the css to edit it. whatever i am editing isn’t really changing anything! thanks in advance!! ciao”

I am not the “super theme guy”, but I’ll help if I can. In your Dashboard if you go to Presentation>Theme Editor> On the right hand side of the screen you’ll see a link for “Stylesheet”. Click and scroll down the editable textarea about halfway and you’ll see a commented out section called “/* Sidebar */. That’s where all of your Sidebar CSS starts. There is CSS there for both the left and right sidebar. :-)

  • 28 robyn May 26, 2007 at 7:10 am

where do you get the cool sticky note so that folks can subscribe to our feed??!! Thanks for the second source–its working perfectly!

  • 29 waz May 26, 2007 at 8:34 am

    thanks Hans!
yep she is moderating her comments…

  • 30 Hans May 26, 2007 at 9:25 am

    @ robyn

no need to change the margin whatsoever, I’ve included proper styling so that things don’t get out of the sidebar. You just wrap the text around a <p></p> tag and this will apply the proper styling so that the text don’t goes further off the sidebar, that’s it.

As for the subscribe image, just right-click on mine above and save as for yourself. Then use simple html code to place the image in the sidebar, i.e :

    <a href="subscription link"><img src="your image link" alt="subscribe via email" /></a>

That’s it :) enjoy then. If you need help about email subscription or more clarification, please do ask me :)

  • 31 Hans May 26, 2007 at 9:28 am

    @ Beau

thanks for bringing your insights on the subject Beau. Hope things are well for you and the theme on your side. :) cheers…….. I’ll be fixing the IE 7 issue and let you have the updates. Thanks for your screenshots :)

;-) Well done. You fixed IE7 issues :-) Hans, I had emailed you for some help. Did you get that?

    Thanks, will try tonight.

Excellent theme, I would love to use it but I can’t seem to figure out how to make it centered on the screen versus pushed to the left margin.

  • 37 Hans May 31, 2007 at 3:58 pm

hi Susan, thanks for enjoying it. Infact I’ll be releasing a new one just like you said, centered with the sidebar on the two furthest sides. I’m just working on it now and will be posting to let everyone know so that I can have feedback on it. Do keep in touch

  • 38 Erjati Jun 1, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    Hi Hans,

A few notes on the above comments:

Re the problem with the title and description colliding with a full row of page tabs, I recommend scooting them up a bit so they clear, as you saw I did in my much altered version of the theme. WARNING: I DO NOT GUARANTEE THE CODE I INSERT IN THIS POST WILL WORK FOR YOU. USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR FILES FIRST.

    Here’s my code from style.css:
    #header h1 { font-size: 22px; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, SunSans-Regular, sans-serif; line-height: 30px; text-align: left; margin: -10px 0px 0px 50px; padding-right: 0 }
    #blog_info h1 { font-size: 22px; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, SunSans-Regular, sans-serif; line-height: 30px; text-align: left; margin: 30px 0 0 50px; padding-top: 12px; padding-right: 0 }
    * html div#blog_info h1 { font-size: 22px; margin-bottom: 3px; margin-top: -3px; margin-right: 0px;}
    .Desc { font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, SunSans-Regular, sans-serif; text-align: left; margin: 6px 0 0 60px !important; padding: 0 0 0 60px !important; }
    #blog_info .desc { text-align: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0; padding-left: 80px; margin-top: 5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 80px;}

NOTE: this will align the text to the LEFT, not the right, and “indent” it a bit. Also, this css code is not of expert quality, but it works on my site within Firefox and IE6. The blog name is indented 50px from the left and the description is indented 80px from the left - this will help you read the above code if you want to change the position to the right, in which case you will need to fiddle with those left/right margin figures. It can be tricky.

Another fix/hack I had to use was to correct the way the header.php was displaying in IE6, in which some change I made revealed the problem someone mentioned above where the order of certain elements was not what was intended. It seems IE likes to be a bit more literal in displaying elements according to the order they are in the page code. So I moved some code around in header.php, putting the blog name and description code above the navmenu code. In the original you see:

followed by that section’s code, and the navmenu code is immediately after that. I reversed them and IE6 cooperated again. Here is my version of that code section. Again, I don’t guarantee this code. It works for me. Use it at your own risk.:

    /”>

    current_page_itempage_item”>“>

    The mininav code follows this.

I apologize for not listing my site address here for readers to see it, but I am still in testing mode and the installation is not even on the final domain name, which is actually undecided.

Sorry to see the original theme still chokes IE6. IE is a real pain in the assessment. I still have a few IE issues with my layout but they aren’t bad looking if the viewer is not wise to the Firefox view.

I look forward to the split sidebar version, as I have a use for it for another project. Also, maybe tell how to make it a little narrower if desired. I’m concerned with people who have lower resolutions or smaller monitors.

Another suggestion: for the main #content area, it would be useful to have that one css element control the left-right position of all the pieces that go inside of it. I could use that to adjust the position of my content in IE.

Keep up the good work. You have been very helpful. I look forward to hearing from you, Hans, on the earlier message I emailed you.

  • 39 Erjati Jun 1, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Another note: I sent Hans a zip file with better optimized copies of all the header images that he is going to include with an upcoming release. These files will cut download time for our dialup brothers and sisters in particular. You can download them here:

  • 40 Erjati Jun 1, 2007 at 10:02 pm

I didn’t do that link insertion correctly. Here’s the text and proper link for the new headers:

    http://www.netpositivesolutions.com/headers-optimized.zip

  • 41 Erjati Jun 1, 2007 at 10:16 pm

I see that in my longer post above that the longer insertions of code did not show up for some reason. If you want a text file version of the middle part of the above post with the full code, go to this link:

    I hope this helps.

  • 42 Erjati Jun 1, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Hans! Your comment thingie is acting odd, not putting in my links or code consistently, and yes, I put in the end tag.

Here’s the link to the code page again, as text and a link just in case:

    http://www.netpositivesolutions.com/headercodechange.htm

  • 43 Susan Jun 1, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Wonderful! I can’t wait because I will definitely be downloading it for my test blog. Thanks!

u could have told me abt it..nyways if u want any modifications in that part that i modified please do so…not a problem.

U have made some really good modifications in the theme including the rotating banner…

  • 45 Susan Jun 5, 2007 at 11:36 pm

Any update on the centered theme versus hanging on the left side? I am really anxious to try it out.

  • 46 raizamn Jun 6, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Hi there, superb theme you have here,

Like Jason, I also get the

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /*****/wp-content/themes/myjournal-supareal-10/functions.php:6) in /******/wordpress/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 275

when I activate or deactivate a plugin

I still use Wordpress 2.1.3, but when i rename your function.php the problems gone. I will check though what features will be “lost” because of the rename.

  • 47 Hans Jun 6, 2007 at 8:57 pm

thanks indeed for all of this Erjati. I’m eager to see that final version of the new mod you did with Supareal. It’s really light and soul pleasing

  • 48 Hans Jun 6, 2007 at 9:00 pm

Sorry Abhishek, I didn’t have your blog’s link. Do please consider adding your blog to my blogroll at UBSquare. btw don’t forget to subscribe to my feeds, since for any update of myjournal and further release of themes, I’m going to be posting it and sure I don’t want you to miss that

  • 49 Hans Jun 6, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Hi Susan, check out my themes depository :) I’ve updated it with the new theme called Elvion. I haven’t yet posted about it, putting its details forward but I shall do so soon.

Do tell me whether you liked it. If you want I can do something that fits your description of the theme you’re looking for. Do get in touch and send me your details so that I can work on it :)

  • 50 Hans Jun 6, 2007 at 9:08 pm

hi Erjati, I’ve taken notes of all those little details and I’ll be considering to implement them in a future release.

Infact, I’m already working on it, such that you can have maximum control over things like moving your sidebar, ie putting them either on the left or the right, etc and making things work the best they can on IE too.

As for the navbar, in the current version I’m working, I’ll be changing the way it is being displayed so as to accommodate lots of pages. I’ve remarked that having many pages will push the description further away.

  • 51 Hans Jun 12, 2007 at 6:34 pm

the features I’ve included within the functions.php is to let you have the capability to install the widgets plugins and allow easy drap and drop of items within your sidebar directly within your Wordpress’s admin section.

That’s it if you rename/remove the functions.php, nothing bad if you don’t need such features.

    Hi,
Thanks for the great theme! I have one question. Is there a way I can remove the syndication info in the first sidebar, including the sticky note and technocrati info? I tried to edit it out in the sidebar.php under edit theme and presentations, but this message appears under it: “If this file were writable you could edit it.”

As you can see in my blog, I have this info elsewhere and would to remove it here.

    Thanks.

  • 55 Will Sep 18, 2007 at 3:59 am

    Hi,
It’s Will again. I think I might have figured it out. I renamed the sidebar.php file to sidebar-old.php. Then using PSPad, I edited the sidebar.php file to remove those sections, saved it and then uploaded it to replace the sidebar.php file in the blog theme on my host. It seems to be working correctly. Do you think I did this right?

  • 56 Will Sep 18, 2007 at 5:22 am

Okay this will be my last query, I promise. Can you tell me what I need to do to edit the header image so that I can use 300×900 images. I am a little afraid to edit the header.php file, and even if I do, is there another file I have to edit as well? :???:

  • 57 Justin (pusha) Oct 29, 2007 at 4:04 am

    Hello there,
I’m preparing to use your theme on my blog, but I don’t want to have the header image rotate. I just want one header image. I tried to add my header image and erase the other ones but it did not work (I did this in all the folders that contained header images). Should I erase the .db and php files too since I am not using those functions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Justin

  • 58 Hans Oct 29, 2007 at 7:56 pm

    @ Justin (pusha):

Hi Justin, to have only 1 header image all you have to do is to delete images you don’t want from the images/rotator folder found in the theme’s folder. Don’t tamper with any other files since that would make things unstable. To have your unique header image, put it as the only one in the images/rotator folder. That’s it.

Perhaps you should better check the updated version : WideJournal.
