Things you should know for choosing the right domain name

June 25th, 2007 by Hans

Choosing the right domain name, your site’s address is one of the most vital things before setting up a blog since it will be related to your online identity and fame. But many have chosen domains hastily regretting it afterwards but now moving to a new one could prove to be very fatal. So to avoid you most of those down-pits, I’ll be telling you quick tips in this post you should be knowing when choosing the right domain name for your site.

  1. Keywords in domain should reflect the blog’s identity.Problogger.net & Dailyblogtips.com among many others have one thing in common, is that by looking at the address itself, one can guess what the site’s about. Is your domain name reflecting that?
  2. Avoid your name if it’s professional. I think one of the many things that can help differentiate between a personal/diary style blog and news sites is the use of the author’s name in the domain name. If you blog on any kind of news, don’t use your name in your domain name since that will surely show the site maybe a personal one.
  3. Make it easy to pronounce. But then how? Don’t use words that have different spelling but the same kind of pronunciation? Moreover be sure that when you’re using a word that spells differently in the British v/s American English, you should be making it clear for your British/American visitors to avoid confusion. Making your domain easy to pronounce will also allow people to remember it easily. Would your domain name be quick and easy to pronounce on the phone?
  4. Avoid the hyphen/punctuations inside your domain. Many times when people want a domain so much but then it has already been taken, they would be resorting to various kinds of punctuations like putting the hyphen to separate the main keywords. Do heed Thilak’s advice over his biggest blogging mistake he did by :

Using a domain name which contains ‘-’ and a .net prefix

  5. Choose a domain name and stick with it. When deciding over a domain, choose something that you’re willing to stay and stick with. Sure domain names might be cheap but it might be costly if you happen to change afterwards since all your content’s value will be lost. Engtech has thus lost all his Technorati value when switching briskly for a new domain name from Engtech.com to internetducttape.com

I would also suggest you using this handy tool at LeapFish.com, that allow you to input a domain name and it will calculate its worth(in dollars) by evaluating various factors based on keywords people search the most or whether it does have unwanted character like the hyphen, etc. There are also various tutorials and resources on the site that should be given a quick look for you to learn more on the subject of picking the right domain name.

I remember having the above issues when talking about a domain name with Stéphane(Perhaps he could give us more of those handy tips if I’ve missed any :P?) through which I’ve learnt many of the above. Have you got anything to share on this issue? Your experience and encounter with domain names? Please do take a comment and thanks for reading through.
